ANTIGONE
The Theatre Unit’s rendering of Anouilh’s Antigone was a fine, sensitive performance. As Katherine Cornell demonstrated in the 1945 New York version, this play is a vehicle for the virtuosity of the heroine. The Theatre Unit’s Antigone was Kusum Bahl and it was certainly a tour de force on her part.
EURYDICE
Kusum with Zul Vellani in Eurydice, a production of Theatre Unit, Bombay, directed by E. Alkazi in 1959. About her acting, it was said that not many are able to be entirely oblivious of an audience, to ignore the many extraneous distractions that creep in during a performance. As long as she lives each moment of the script, as long as she treats each syllable as if it were the most important thing on earth, there are not likely, for a long, long time, to be many rivals on Kusum Bahl’s horizon.
JOAN OF ARC
The Lark by Anouilh was produced by the American Theatre Association, New Delhi in 1961. The director was Tom Noonan. Kusum played the role of Joan, and critcs said that anyone who wishes to see great acting should see her in this sustained piece of intensity, this almost savage faith, this marvelous interpretation of innocence and obsession.
MUDRARAKSHASA
Mudrarakshasa (The Signet Ring) by Visakadutta, produced by Television and Theatre Associates and directed by Amal Allana. Manohar Singh acted the role of Chanakya and Kusum Haidar of Chandragupta Maurya in the play, presented in the year 2000
